A NEW entry into the city’s crowded calendar of festivals is the Galway Cartoon Festival, which arrives next week and runs from October 21 to 30, with the aim of celebrating and showcasing drawings which make us laugh and make us think.

Galway-based company Orreco, which has worked with Olympic athletes and elite professional sports teams around the world, has recently been nominated for the prestigious DatSci Awards.

Galway students showed that creativity and innovation is alive in the west when they won top awards at the Enterprise Ireland Student Entrepreneur awards last week.

Enterprise Town is coming to Oranmore! On Saturday May 13 in Calasanctius College a free expo supported by Bank of Ireland Oranmore showcasing local businesses, amenities, schools and sporting and voluntary groups will take place from 11am to 4pm.

A host of food producers from across the west will showcase everything from honey to cheese and sea cucumber to craft beer – all aimed at increasing the range on offer in local shops, cafes and restaurants. They are all part of Galway’s Food & Drink Showcase, organised by the Local Enterprise Office Galway and Bord Iascaigh Mhara and taking place at the Galway Hooker Brewery in Oranmore on Monday March 6.

The sixth annual Galway Food Festival will take place over the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend from April 13-17. This year the festival’s theme will celebrate the relationship between ‘Food and Community’ through an innovative food programme of over 100 events, focusing on Galway’s 21st Century cultural identity through food.

The Galway Board of the Town Commissioners was established in the early 1830s and one of its first objectives was the provision of gas lighting in the city. In December 1836, the commissioners invited a Mr Lyddle from Glasgow to do a survey of the town and he recommended the establishment of a Galway Gas Company. His advice was taken. Shares were snapped up, an agreement was reached between the company and the town commission, and the Rev D’Arcy was appointed company secretary.

Killala based company Carr and Sons Seafood Limited was honored with the Best in Mayo Award at Blas na hÉireann. The company was also awarded a gold for its Hot Smoked Salmon Sensation with its unique blend of flavours which is characteristic of the Carr and Sons Seafood name.

Following rigorous judging, a county Galway food business was named among the top seven winners in the 2016 National Organic Awards. Some 278 individual products were submitted in the Awards, a record high level of entries.
